Since the very beginning of Long Way, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman were keen to see the work that UNICEF are doing across the world to help Children in need.
In 2004, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman embarked upon what would be the first of three journeys of a lifetime to film the first in the Long Way series - Long Way Round. They travelled through Europe and Asia on their motorbikes, learning about the countries, the people, their histories and their cultures as they passed through. While on this journey, they visited three UNICEF programmes in Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
Following these visits, Ewan and Charley were made Unicef UK Ambassadors. Since then, they have continued to actively support UNICEF, tirelessly fundraising and advocating for children all over the world.
In 2007, the pair embarked on their second adventure Long Way Down and saw UNICEF’s work with child soldiers in Uganda and land-mine awareness programmes in Ethiopia. Both have taken on additional separate projects during their time as Unicef UK Ambassadors in addition to the Long Way series, highlighting UNICEF’s work on child immunisation, malnutrition and child protection issues, support for children in emergencies and the plight facing children in some of the world’s worst crises, like the conflict in Syria.
In this next instalment on their respective Long Way and UNICEF journeys, Ewan and Charley are back on their bikes to travel from Argentina to Los Angeles for Long Way Up. The series will see them visit three further UNICEF programmes as the pair continue to learn more about the organisation’s work and highlight issues affecting children in South and Central America.
