Rivian R1T

Electric Filming PICKUP Trucks

It started with an email requesting a couple of EV’s to support the third instalment of Ewan and Charley’s epic “Long Way” saga. Problem was, Rivian were a couple years away from having the trucks ready for production.

Rivian were able to accelerate the learning and improve the vehicles across 13,000 miles of changing terrain, elevation and weather, allowing the team to travel anywhere with no restrictions. It also presented a problem to solve – how to build charge points through some of the most remote locations on earth.

After meeting the team and figuring a few things out, Rivian fast-tracked two all-electric R1T test vehicles and got them down to Ushuaia in time for the 3-month trip.

Rivian is an electric vehicle maker that builds both adventure products as well as B2B products such as Amazon last mile delivery vans. The company’s launch vehicles, the R1T and R1S, deliver up to 400+ miles of range and provide an unmatched combination of performance, off-road capability and utility.

These vehicles use the company’s flexible skateboard platform and will be produced at Rivian’s manufacturing plant in Normal, Ill., with customer deliveries expected to begin in summer 2021.

Supporting Rivian’s mission of ‘keeping the world adventurous forever’, the Long Way Up team hope to inspire viewers to explore the world in new ways showcasing the remarkable technology pioneered by Rivian and encourage use of petrol alternatives.

Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe told The Verge “Every single one of our vehicles has to have this Patagonia-like feel of enabling adventure,” so where better to take the vehicles than Patagonia itself.
